It is important for swimmers to know the risks of diving into the seas, rivers and swimming pools.

The injuries produced by diving in shallow areas could produce quadriplegia or loss of movement from the neck down

Do not swim in pools or on beaches when you drink alcohol or take drugs because it will decrease your motor and sensory reflexes used for protection

CHILDREN CAN QUICKLY SLIP AWAY AND ENTER THE POOL

  1. Sometimes accidents caused through water immersion may cause permanent brain damage

The time in which aid is given is crucial as this can reduce the chances of a permanent incapacitation and death.
  2. The key to prevent such tragedies is to have adequate poolside protection. This should include the placing of barriers and alarms around the poolside to prevent dangerous access to the pool. Children and small babies should be supervised at all times. People should be prepared for an emergency and have knowledge of Cardiovascular Resuscitation in order to save lives.
  • The pool should have the relevant safety equipment, a near by phone to be use in an emergency and emergency numbers listed beside it

  • Be sure to check that there are no large objects in the pool before diving or swimming.

  • Violence is another problem that we must consider. Drugs and alcohol predispose people to act in a violent manner. This can produce serious consequences when brain and spinal cord trauma is the outcome
