CURRENT REPORT OF THE WORKSHOPS ON ROAD AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION OFFERED TO SCHOOLS OF DOWNTOWN LIMA

The workshops on Road and Environmental Education were proposed with the objective to offer information on Environmental and Road issues to encourage responsible attitudes to users, pedestrians and future drivers within the Downtown Lima Transportation System.

These workshops are addressed to high school students that are located in adjoining zones to the “Corredor Vial Grau” which is part of the marketing strategy to spread this transportation system, as its implementation will be completed soon and students will be potentials users of the transportation service related to this structure due to their different activities. Even more, they will be the ones who will have the best perception of the changes that will be produced at Downtown Lima Transportation System.

This workshop was developed, as was previously agreed and signed, by the NEUROSURGICAL PERUVIAN AMERICAN FOUNDATION, an organization that has its headquarters in California, USA, through their program Think First "Piensa Primero", One of the main objectives of this institution is to create a sense of responsibility on the mandatory use of seat belts for drivers and all the occupants of vehicles.

On behalf of the Lions Club North Lima the following people attended:

Mister Enrique Gonzáles Castillo and Mrs. – President

Elena Urquiano - First Vice president

Ely Romero – Second Vice president

Roberto Vidal and wife – Third Vice-President

Luis Sono Cabrera and his wife – Secretary

Bernardo Vargas Martel – Treasurer

Elena Boulangger – Vocal

Hildaura Pacheco Serna – Vocal

On behalf of the Peruvian American Neurosurgical Foundation:

Architect Rodolfo Paz and his wife

This meeting took place at the School of Architecture the National University Federico Villarreal, located in Passage Paez 140 Jesus Maria, Lima.

. The dissertation on “Piensa Primero” “Think First” and the Foundation began at 8:00 p.m. The different approaches, objectives, purposes, recommendations and the future projection of our institution were analyzed.  This dissertation, which took two hours, was carried out with multimedia equipment at the new auditorium of the Faculty.  .

It was important to show in this meeting that both institutions are united by their ideals. The meeting took place in a calm and safe environment with good facilities and equipment and with no time limits placed upon the conference. This was due to the good coordination of the event with the president of the Lions Club. The Lions Club was contacted several weeks in advance to ensure the success of the meeting and the advancement of “Piensa Primero” “Think First”.

At the end of the presentation at 10:00 pm, cocktails were offered on behalf of the Foundation as a way to show our gratitude to the whole Board of Directors of the Lions Club of North Lima who attended.

Details of the points raised in this presentation as follow:

1. 32 views of "Piensa Primero" “Think First” were displayed by Dr. Federico Valencia Lara, Director of the Lima chapter of the National Injury Prevention Foundation,

2.  106 views of the Road and Environmental Education Workshop of the Municipality of Downtown Lima –Urban Transportation Administration were displayed. These views are still being displayed at all the important schools where this workshop is offered. These were coordinated as team work by the following institutions:

A. “Piensa Primero”  “Think First”
B.  Downtown special project – Non Motorized Transportation
C.  Zoom
D.  Construyendo Building
Obviously these 106 views were displayed very fast while Architect Rodolfo Paz explained the experiences at the educational centers that have been visited.

3.  The road education workshop brochure was displayed

4.  The Sticker of the Urban Transportation Administration was displayed

5.  The Sticker of civic safety was displayed

6.  The Sticker of the Lions Club Lima was displayed

7.  The Urban Transportation Management report was displayed.  It will be presented later, in December 2006, by the Lions Club together with pictures, programs, calendars, photos, etc.

8.  The Road Safety General Motors Corporation Bulletin (GMC): Safe Driving Program was displayed. There were approximately 20 questions and respective answers shown. This helped to make the conference feel more dynamic.

The questions always began by:  "Did you know that….?”

For example:  While driving at a speed of 60km per hour, dialing a phone number from a cell phone would imply traveling 100 meters blindly.

"Now you know it. Take action and pull over in a safe place to talk on your cell phone", "drive safely – avoid accidents".

9.  The bulletin AIPEUC, On Line Bulletin –California Chapter – Los Angeles- Vol 1 – N2 – September 2006 was displayed.  It showed the 2006 – 2007 report made by the president Anselmo Pineda MD, regarding the affiliated institutions of the chapter where the Neurosurgical Peruvian American Foundation NPAF can be found. This reports states that “Piensa Primero” “Think First” is being promoted under the initiative of its President and its Secretary of Public Relations, in coordination with the Lions Club of North Lima in the city of Lima – Peru.

10.  To conclude, 22 views of the Neurosurgical Peruvian American Foundation were shown. The first one, Educational Project through Foundations, was presented by Mrs. Monique Pineda, President of the NPAF.

The purpose of these slides was to show the Lions Club of North Lima that we not only are dedicated to help our fellow men through "Piensa Primero" Think First but that we have a bigger range of aid to help the community

Recommendations and conclusions

After Architect Rodolfo Paz’s presentation, a dialogue between both parts was carried out and we arrived at the following conclusions and recommendations.

A) Activities are being carried out with the support of many doctors regarding health prevention, Piensa Primero, and with tents at parks. It was agreed to increase the mission at Los Olivos district like this:

Architect Rodolfo Paz, will coordinate with the dean of the Faculty of Dentistry and with the Dean of the Medical Faculty of the National University Federico Villarreal of Lima, in order to have the assistance and support of medical students at no charge.

B) It was agreed to carry out permanent meetings as the ultimate aim of the Board of Directors is the development of “Piensa Primero” “Think first” and that there are many different ways to achieve it.

C) The Board of directors of the Lions Club of North Lima is interested in traveling on May 2007 to Los Angeles in order to show all the positive things that have been made at the AIPEUC Convention. Four months ago they traveled to Boston, USA, where they participated with a Peruvian parade and a Peruvian folk dance group. They finished in 2nd place among representatives of Lions Club of the whole world.

D) It was agreed that every request or question from the associates of the Lions Club will be communicated through its president who will coordinate or report to the Foundation through Mr. Rodolfo Paz.

E) During the meetings at the Lions Club of North Lima, aid will be requested for the Municipality of Lima through the foundation.

F) The reports that the Lions Club will show to the foundation will be the same that has been shown by the Municipality of Lima.

G) It was unanimously approved to offer thanks and gratitude to Dr. Anselmo Pineda and to Mrs. Monique Pineda for the work developed by the Neurosurgical Peruvian American Foundation.
